NorthStar Generator Wheel Kit Review

If you have a big honking Northstar generator, obviously wheels are a must, unless you plan to just set it in place and never move it.

Mine gets moved a fair amount, and it weights over 400 pounds, so I went with the wheel kit.

The wheels are OK, but they run low/flat every couple of months and need to be refilled. This can be a real pain if you pushed the generator into a corner where you can't get at the wheels to add air - a 400 pound deadweight on flat tires doesn't move easily.

So, if you buy these, check the air in the tires every so often unless you feel like a test of strength and will the next time you need to pull the generator out.

Powerfilm F15-1800 30W Folding Solar Panel Charger - Digital Camo Review

I bought this panel for charging small electronics off the grid (ham radio hts and batteries, gps and smartphones) . My model is the camo one. The build quality is superb and the panel folds up easily. While I did not hook it up to a meter for this trip, I charged a phone (29% to full charge) in 2 1/2 hours starting the charge at 4 pm. I had been looking at the Brunton 26w folding panel for about a year when this item appeared. If you are contemplating a foldable panel it is important to monitor prices as they are all over the place and be prepared to move fast if the price is right. I bought this panel for $288 and a month later it is $474!!! The Brunton was between 280 and about 500! Lots of price variability in the personal preparedness category. The powerfilm family of solar panels have a number of accessories or you could put on your own connectors such as powerpoles. My panel came with a cigarette lighter adapter. I would suggest the optional 15 foot extension cord. If you want or need the ability to charge your items anywhere this panel is excellent!

Fantastic batteries at a reasonable price delivered by ups freight to my house. This bank serves my construction rv well. I'm off grid not by choice for the next year. This 40w panel and charging system is great for smaller trailers that have one or two batteries. I don't know why other companies don't offer similar solutions like this one where everything you need is in one order and comes in one box and is priced perfectly for the need. Solar panel, regulator, status panel, mounting brackets and wire is all here. The only complaint (but not enough to knock the rating down to 4 stars) is that the documentation is rather sketchy.
The panel output is about 22 volts in full sunlight and charges the batteries with well over 2 amps of charge current after regulation. This will easily provide a full charge to the batteries after a typical day and night of usage at a campsite. The status panel is clear and shows all the critical data of battery voltage, panel voltage, and charge current.
Installation took less than 2 hours on my 18 ft trailer. I had to drill only one access hole under the chassis (remember to caulk it up afterwards for waterproofing) and placed the regulator under the dinette seat and the status panel next to the door.Wiring was simple and dressed up nicely (be careful to keep voltage polarity correct)
All in all, this is a dynamite product and if the documentation was complete it would be really perfect. Other manufacturers should take note!

SunSocket Sun-Tracking Solar Generator Review

Aspect Solar has come along with a game changer for portable power.

Specs - total weight is only 25LBS and folds up nicely into a suitcase like package. Set up is easy and getting power even quicker. Real time to get power going (battery was already somewhat powered up) was less that 4 minutes - the battery will charge from completely dead to full power in around 5hrs (sunny day) and 9ish hours on a cloudy day. USB sockets, 12V DC socket, AC universal socket and a standard DC input for wall charging all come standard out of the box. The coolest feature is the "Sun Tracking". Once its up and working you never have to reposition the solar panels to get maximum charge, the device will track the sun for you. Super sweet.

The use case scenario for this product is pretty unlimited but here is how I see my self using it -
Emergency - lately storms in the US seem to be more and more devastating, with most of the problems coming after the storm not during. If your area has no power for days let alone weeks how are you supposed to keep food protected or communicate to the outside world. This is a must have in your emergency kit.

Outdoor/Cabin
Living in the west provides me with all kinds of outdoor opportunities, knowing that I can take power with me any were means I can do pretty much anything anywhere - put it in my cabin for primary or back up power.
