I hesitated for a while before adding a stand-by generator, but decided to finally do it and spend a bit more for this Kohler unit than a comparable or smaller Generac. I do not regret for one second making this investment. After Hurricane Sandy, my town was out of power for a week or more. I ran this generator for 6 full days (ten seconds after we lost power until it finally was restored) and this machine did not hiccup for a second. Did not burn a drop of oil and hardly used any coolant at all. Other people in town with Generacs either had failures after 3 days or had to shut down to add oil every few days. And having a 200 Amp transfer switch (separate) means I can go about my business as normal even with an extra ten people over. Cooking, washing, lights, heat, (even the x-box thankfully) went on as if nothing happened.

I put a fence around it to spare my neighbors the sound of the generator reverberating off of my brick house. In the house, I only hear it if I go over to the wall where it rests. I highly recommend this unit. I think based on Sandy alone, my investment has paid for itself.
