Weber 566002 Q 220 Portable 280-Square-Inch 12000-BTU Liquid-Propane Gas Grill Review

I bought this grill (online) to replace the latest in a series of disappointing (and increasingly expensive) backyard BBQ's that were costing me $100 worth of repair parts and considerable grief every year. Having had a single Weber charcoal grill for 25 years I knew they knew BBQ and quality. Reviewing the features of the Q series, it appeared to me ( as an engineer and discriminating BBQ'r,) that they had "a better idea. "
That said, the Weber web site is disappointing and tells you very little about the size and differences between the various Q series grills.
Ok, here goes.
My grill arrived standing on end in an apparent "rough delivery". Opening the box I saw that it was packed SUPER securely with multiple layers of form fit HD card/ fiber board. Impressive packaging. . No damage. From there it took all of 5 minutes to assemble. Two pins for the cover, two screws for the handle , a nut for the thermometer . ANYBODY could do this in 10 min (with no more than a screwdriver.) I got the Q 220 model which is their, higher end, mid sized portable. Overall closed size is 31" long x 16" wide (with the cover handle and hinges sticking out a few more inch's on each side . ). Closed height is approx 16" off the table/ground. Grill surface area is slightly football shaped and has a max dimension of 15"wx 21" long. The grill /grate itself is a 1 piece, massively heavy, ceramic coated cast iron with solid sections that protect the burner below from drippings (Very smart feature!) The cover of the Q220 is approx 7" tall in the center and includes a thermometer. (BTW, that similar in height as a 22" charcoal Weber and 1" taller than the 200) IMHO, the grill size is "just right" for a home grill that can still double for the occasional trip to the park or grandma's. It's still light enough for one person to carry @ 36# (w cyl) and small enough to get into your truck but big enough to grill for a extended family. ( It will hold about 12 � # burgers (or 9 and 8 dogs) at one time. Just as important, the mass of the cast iron allows you to cook predictably fast and rotate food through with a decent rate/speed. The extra cover height makes it adequate to grill a whole chicken, � turkey or family sized roast.
As for performance, I was initially worried about the 12,500 BTU rating (which was 1/3 of my large grill.) However, with the combination of smaller cooking area , cast aluminum body and heavy grill, I'll tell you that this grill can bury the thermometer needle @ 600deg F in just 15 min after hitting the ( upgraded/more reliable) igniter . I.e. She gets HOT ! Cooking steaks seems to take � the time of even my stainless behemoth 42,000BTU BBQ.! Best of all when it's time to flip them, you still get that satisfying Sizzle that tells you the grill has enough reserve heat to sear the other side. ( Nothing worse than a baked $10 steak IMHO) The design is that good! One last note: The shape of the grill funnels all drippings to the easily removable /disposable waste pan. This makes the possibility of a flash fire (and /or dumping old grease everywhere ) much less likely.

Step by Step Instructions

1. Open the smoker and remove the rack and drip tray. Place 2 tablespoons of wood chips in the bottom of the base pan.
2. Place the drip tray on top of the wood chips in the base pan.
3. Place the rack into the drip tray.
4. Put the food to be smoked and cooked onto the rack, and slide the lid closed. Place the smoker on the heat source set to a medium heat.

Keep the heat set at a medium heat. The wood chips will start smoking within two minutes. There will be a small trail of smoke ( as little as a cigarette trail) that will come out from the corners of the smoker. After the cooking time, remove the smoker from the heat source, place it on a heat resistant surface, and carefully open the lid. A lot of steam will come out, and the food should be smoked and fully cooked. Place the food on a plate, and put the smoker in the sink. The ashes should be washed down the drain with the faucet running. Warm soapy water can be used to clean the smoker, or it can be placed in the dishwasher. Smoking food has many benefits as it can be done no matter what the weather may be outside - and it can be used on any heat source-gas, electric, induction, BB Grills, camp fire or a hot plate for a perfect smoky taste.

It is healthy cooking as no fat, oil, salt or flavoring needs to be used-great for dieting . It smokes and cooks the food at the same time . The food cooks in it's own juices, so keeps very moist. We have 9 flavors of wood chips to create different flavors. If you want to combo cook, you can smoke food first and then finish it in the oven or on the grill to get brown and crispy. I used it to prepare chicken breasts, and they cooked fast and were juicy and tender, and had just the right amount of smoke flavor. I'm looking forward to using my stovetop smoker for seafood and vegetables. It's a great way to add flavor to food, and a very healthy way to cook.The smoker is constructed from heavy steel and is well made. I could smell the smoke as the food cooked, but it wasn't intense and there was no smoke in the house. I'll still use my outdoor smoker for batch cooking or for smoking large birds, but expect to get a lot of use out of the stovetop smoker. This grill cover is a joke! Flimsy, cheap, etc. I doubt it would last six months without ripping or being eaten up by the sun. Plus, the draw string is just that, a piece of string! Don't but this one. I ended up buying the "Mr. Bar BQ platinum prestige" cover after I got this one, and its way better with an easy velcro strap instead of a cheap draw string.

Flame King YSN-212 Propane Cylinder Gas Gauge Meter Review

I bought this gauge to help prevent running out of propane when a big weekend was in the works, and it worked great for about two weeks.

Then a plastic bushing inside the nozzle broke and fell out, and it could no longer get a gas tight seal to the line going to the grill, making it useless.

Emails to Flame King requesting replacement or assistance were ignored, so customer support gets a one (zero) star rating too.

Flimsy unreliable useless waste of money.

Brinkmann Propane Tank Gauge Review

This type of gauge will never read properly, for what we want (a reliable indicator of when to change tanks). Propane is a refrigerant (a refer that explodes), and like all refrigerants its pressure is dependent on its temperature through almost all conditions (technical: as long as there is a bit of liquid refrigerant in the tank, the refrigerant occupies the flat area on the P/T curve). As a result, you'll always "read green" on the gauge until it almost exhausts the tank (= vaporize the last of the liquid). If you watch the gauge while cooking (a real trick), you'll see the needle drop in the last 5--10 minutes, but of course at this point you have food in mid-cook. Watching the size of the flame jets is just as effective in getting a lead time (no jet = no gas!!). I tried this gauge twice (I'm such a glutton for punishment), and both times when I changed tanks (after a "surprise outage" in the middle of a cook) the gauge then refused to pass gas; I surmise the tank change operation introduced a spec of dust (twice) that blocked an internal port. When you're cooking (and the shrimps on the barbie are making fun of you), you're not going to sit down and clean out the ports (if they can be cleaned; at $13 I'm not investing anymore time). Fortunately, these gauges are as easy to take out as they are to install, so the shrimps lost the game after all. However: "never again". On the bright side: we have Recycling here, so some lucky sorting facility gets some brass!! I love happy endings.

Brinkmann 812-1092-S Universal Grill Cover, 55-Inch Review

For $12.99, this cover could not be a better deal for our mid-sized grill. Seems fairly durable and unlikely to tear, but I would make sure the grill is not hot before covering it. The grill stays dry even in the wettest of weather, and I think it would protect the grill through the winter snow we get in the Northeast.

It said the shipping would take a long time, but the cover arrived in two days.

Char-Broil Hickory Wood Chips Review

I find this real convenient for the occasional smokeout. Ok so I may not be an avid Q'er but these chips release their essence over a pretty long period when soaked long enough. Because they are chips, my preheat time is a lot less than logs or chunks. I usually soak in lukewarm water for 10 minutes or half hour in cold water and put em in little home-made al-foil packets with holes. The warm water actually softens the wood more so the smoke is long and slow. Really great on ribs and poultry. So good am now a repeat buyer.
