Weber 386002 Q 100 Portable 189-Square-Inch 8500-BTU Liquid-Propane Gas Grill Review

I've been using a Q100 / Baby Q for over 2 years now, and am still impressed by the quality of the product and what I'm able to do with it given it's small size. Here's the set up:

Q100 Grill
Weber Cart
Bulk tank adapter
5-lb. propane tank

The grill surface is large enough for a family of four. Six 1/3 lb. burgers fit well enough; more and they are hard to turn. I've also been able to do two average sized tri-tips at once. The lid isn't tall enough to allow a whole chicken. I was a bit wary of the 8K BTU rating at first, but the grill heats up just fine- it will do a wonderful sear on pretty much anything after 7-10 minutes of preheat. The heat is also very even, with the virtually whole grill surface usable. The best thing about the small burner is fuel efficiency; 5 lbs. of propane lasts all season (in SoCal!) at 1-2 uses per week. Please note that this is a single burner grill with a ring-shaped burner. Indirect cooking isn't really possible although on low heat, one can get close enough to do justice to a tri-tip.

I've only got a couple of small complaints... First, the support ring for the portable tank (at least with the Baby Q) only accepted 14 oz. propane bottles- the kind used with plumber's torches. They are more expensive than the 16 oz. bottles used for camping. I just made my own 16 oz. bottle ring out of a heavy coat hanger. Of course with the bulk tank, this is a non-issue. The 5 lb. tank (from Home Depot) is pretty small. Second, the grill is somewhat sensitive to wind. A good breeze blowing through the sides causes a definite loss of temperature above the grill surface, under the lid. Cooking is still possible but times go up about 30-40%. Last, the holes in the burner can get clogged up, especially when there's a lot of liquid pouring off the grill surface. I've had to 'unclog' parts of the burner with a push-pin a couple of times now.

Anyway, I love the product as it's about 75% of a full-size grill at 1/3 the size and 1/4 the price, within its limits (grill area). I think the only thing I'd do differently is get the version with the side tables (Q120).

Char-Broil Mesquite Wood Chips Review

Ok I don't really shop around much for variations of some products. I tend to find something, like it and stick with it. These Charbroil Mesquite chips are really good. The flavor is intense and the meats/poultry gets that nice deep pink/red color that's the quest of Q lovers. The packs are handy for the occasional smoke that I do (don't have time for more). I usually soak in warm water for 10 minutes to get them in the smoker quickly. My smoker is the home made variety of aluminium foil packs and they last for about an hour. They work surprisingly well for grilling directly when I need the smoke flavor without the wait. I just add a handful in the packet with another handful directly over the lava rocks for lots of smoke in a short time.

This grill cover is designed for a large grill (fits grills up to 24" x 58"). It is made out of waterproof heavy duty material: the outer shell is canvas, the underside is coated with PVS undercoating. It is designed to be outdoors all year round: rain, snow, ice. All seams are double stitched, the top seams are finished with edging. The bottom of the canvas cover has elastic edging, so it assures that the cover stays on. The handles on the top of the cover make it easy to remove. The cover has mesh vents so the moisture is not trapped under the cover.

One side has a larger (23.5"L x 14.5"W) zipped pocket where you can store utensils or cleaning supplies.

The cover is light tan on top and dark brown on the bottom. If there was anything I wanted to change about the cover it would be to make the top darker so the dirt does not show up on it as much. Other than that I am satisfied with it. It feels like a very well made cover that will serve me for many years.

I received a sample cover for testing and an honest review, be it positive or negative. I covered many positive and one small thing I wish was different. Overall, I recommend it. I hope the video showing close-ups of the material and stitching gives you a better idea of the quality of this cover.

As I'm sure is the case with most people, I bought these for indirect cooking -- you have great control of placement of briquettes when you're doing indirect cooking. When you're doing a turkey, you want to pile in the coals but insure they stay to the sides. For this, they work great.

For me, the surprising part is what a great aid they are for direct cooking. By placing them next to each other, you can intensify the heat source and actually raise (as a result of stacking up the briquettes in these) the level of heat source closer to the grill. A great addition when you have something you want to sear at the start of the grilling process.

Weber 1520 Propane Gas Go-Anywhere Grill Review

I bought one of these things ten years ago and despite twice replacing it with big, traditional-looking (and very expensive) grills I keep coming back to this one. In fact, when we bought our latest one at a local fireplace/grill store, the owner just couldn't stop talking about this cheap little grill. He confided to me in a low voice that if I were to lift the lid of his own $2500 home gas barbecue, I'd find this little gem sitting inside because it's all he uses too.Why? It's not ease of cleaning or durability or any of that stuff (they rust out after a few years sitting on the porch). And you'd better buy a big propane bottle with an adapter hose if you don't want to those little gas cylinders to suddenly empty out on you mid-meal while you're cooking for guests... No, the reason I adore this is that it just plain grills better than anything else on the market - and we've tried a lot of them.My wife, the culinary school grad, thinks it's the "flavorizer" that does it (the metal pan that replaces those awful lava rocks). When we grill salmon we just cover that metal pan with alderwood chips and let the smoke penetrate the fish while it grills with the lid on tight - flat out beating every restaurant or neighborbood grilled fish ever made. Friends of mine simply won't cook salmon for us.Even though we virtually never clean the thing, it simply does the best job flavor-wise of all our grills. If you crank it up to high for 10 minutes, then grill with the top closed (never open) you get very consistent heat which is the secret to good grilling.Some cookbook author who writes barbecue books constantly repeats the phrase "Know Your Fire" like a mantra. This fire is 100% consistent, heats up in minutes (again, no lava rocks to soak up heat) and produces superb results for us. If you know your fire, this is the fire to know. Bradley Hickory Bisquettes 48 pack Review

I bought the Bradley Smoker as a present for my self after paying off a debt. I was saddened to learn the Bradley smoker doesn't come with "token" bisquettes.... I didn't know what to get so I bought the "Bradley Special Blend" I read the Bradley recipe for Pork Roast... I did what needed to be done the day before... I got up at 1:30 AM and started smoking a 10 lb Pork Roast. 12 short hours later I became what is now known as A GOD AMONG lesser MEN. I proved it was not a flake when I made smoked Turkey Legs and fed them to folks who don't like Turkey Legs. I was harassed for days until I agreed to make MORE SMOKED TURKEY LEGS for folks who don't like Turkey Legs. And the Brisket! Men fall to their knees in awe and women plant flowers where ever I intend to walk to soften the blow of my steps because of how incredibly awesome the Brisket turned out!

I took all the credit, but the "Bradley Special Blend" is what did all the heavy lifting.

Thanks to the "Bradley Special Blend" I can now walk down the isles at the local Wal Mart where Men hide their faces in shame and women offer to pick out my produce.

In all due honesty... the "Bradley Special Blend" is a very nice general purpose blend that goes pretty well with everything. I have done loads of beef, pork, chicken, turkey, lamb, goat, and even bass and crapie. I always keep it on hand for when their isn't enough Apple to do this, or Hickory to do that... I'm not kidding, it's the Get The JOB Done Blend in my house and NO ONE ever complains.

And that is a Fact!

I like the heavy/sturdy feel of each of these tools, but some of the pieces of the rubber handle come off from time to time but you can just shove them back in the holes. Not a bad set to buy for a low price and get some good miles out of them, but a very basic set.
