I don't know why but NW Wisconsin for some reason had alot of power problems in 2010. Looked at gen sets and bought this one. This thing is great. I installed a transfer switch and built an area outside the house for this unit to sit in. In 10 months I have used it about 5 times. It's performance was great. Oh Oh.....winter is here. Last week the temp was down to -0 and we lost power. The unit would not start, the pull cord would not engage. I used a propane heater (Mr. Heater) to warm it up, and 10 minutes later it was up and running. Summer time it's flawless but when the temp drops down this unit needs to be in a warm place (for starting) or heat it up as I did.

Cheap Asian knock-off? Yeah (the manual was either poorly translated or written by an alcoholic monkey) BUT this thing is quite well constructed and works every bit as well as my bigger Blue Sky MPPT controllers at half the price per amp.

While we were building out our main power system, this was used with a pair of HQRP 85W panels and a pair of Rolls-Surrette thick plate 6V 305 AH batteries to power the RV (pumps, lights, 2KW modified sine inverter, computers and LCD monitors, fans, and a range hood).

Literally took 15 minutes to install and hook up and worked flawlessly for the 3 to 4 months before we finished the main system.

Did I mention it was also (against manufacturer's instructions) sitting out in the weather the whole time?

I'll be building several small standalone systems around the place and will use these for those instead of the more expensive Blue Sky controllers. Hook these into 3 or 4 Kyocera 135W panels, get some decent 220AH AGM batteries and you'll have years of maintenance free power.

Do make sure to have the batteries attached BEFORE hooking in the panels, tho'. :)

Sync Power Resevoir Review

I've only just received this, so I've been testing it out at home. So far, it appears to be working as advertised.

Out of the box, it took the advertised 4 hours to charge the sync battery from an AC wall outlet. Following that, I've charged my HTC Droid Eris Android phone twice over two days, and the sync controller still indicates 75%-100% charge remaining. Extrapolating this leads me to believe that I'll get at least 8 phone charges from one sync charge, which is more than what is advertised. I suppose results vary among the devices you charge.

The unit seems durable enough for camping and backpacking (the reasons I purchased it), but time will tell.

I'm giving it 4 stars because I was surprised by a statement on the packaging that indicates the unit will last about 500 sync battery charges. This limitation was not included in any description I read online anywhere.

Overall, I think it will serve my needs perfectly.

** Update: After a full cycle (draining the sync battery completely), I've managed 7 full smartphone charges, which is one shy of my guess, but still better than advertised.

Diodes placed in series with cells or modules can perform another function that of blocking reverses leakage current backwards through the modules. There are two situations where blocking diodes can help prevent the phenomenon.

• Blocking reverse flow of current from the battery through the module at night.
In battery charging systems, the module potential drops to zero at night, and the battery could discharge all night backwards through the module. This would not be harmful to the module, but would result in loss of precious energy from the battery bank. Diodes placed in the circuit between the module and the battery can block any nighttime leakage flow.

• Blocking reverse flow down damaged modules from parallel modules during the day.
Blocking diodes placed at the head of separate series wired strings in high voltage systems can perform yet another function during daylight conditions. If one string be comes severely shaded, or if there is a short circuit in one of the modules, the blocking diode prevents the other strings from loosing current backwards down the shaded or damaged string. The shaded or damaged string is "isolated" from the others, and more current is sent on to the load. In this configuration, the blocking diodes are sometimes called "isolation diodes".
