Briggs & Stratton 40303 15,000 Watt IntelliGen Natural Gas/Liquid Propane Powered Air Cooled Home Standby Generator (CARB Compliant) Review

To start, I purchased this product from another vendor for much less than amazon. Search and you shall find.
As to why I purchased a Briggs & Stratton. A neighbor of mine had a Generac and it failed him during the Sandy hurricane. It lasted him less than a day. I need to put my faith and family well being in a company that has a four year warranty rather than a one year from the competition. That to me shows they have faith in their own product. Plus after speaking to their tech support I had even more confidence in their company. (No Accent)

To my review:

I was able to save money by doing most of the work myself. I laid the gravel and poured the cement. I ran the black pipe and hook-up to the city gas line. I had all the electrical work done by a professional which cost me $600. Total cost for materials and install came to $4500. That included the 200 AMP Auto-Transfer switch.

After the install we turned the generator on and let it do it's prep cycle. You have to select a time for it to do it's weekly maintenance but that's no big deal it only last 20 minutes or so.
It's loud. Loud enough that even though we have it on the side of the house where the garage should shield us from the noise, we still heard it inside. I can only imagine my neighbors looks if and when there is another blackout.

After it cycled though it's prep we decided to test the automatic transfer switch and see how much of the home it could power before straining the unit. We flipped the main breaker to off, the unit turned on 20 seconds later and then less than a minute after that the transfer switch turned over to the generator and the house went live again.

We went through the home turning on all our appliances while the electrician monitored the power surge through a tool he clipped around the power line.

It handled the following without breaking the 10KW mark so that means we had another 4KW+ to spare (It's only 14KW on natural gas).

2 Refrigerators
3 TV's all over 32 inches.
4 Computers (Desktop, Server and 2 laptops)
3 Cable boxes
1 Whole house Forced Air Heater
1 Dishwasher
1 Clothes Washer
1 Clothes Dryer
1 Microwave
2 Low voltage outdoor path lights
All the clocks (Stove, microwave and alarm clocks)
1 Wired Home Alarm system
all the lights in the house plus the light in the garage (14 total)
And we opened and closed the garage door just for giggles.

Please keep in mind that we turned all the appliances on one at a time and there was a surge but once the appliance was running the surge came down significantly.

I was given advice I plan to follow. Change the oil and filter after the first 5-8 hours of use. Then every 30-40 hours there after. If you use synthetic oil then I was told it can go 100-125 hours between changes.

I also purchased the LED Generator Status indicator plate. It is just a Red light that blinks X amount of times with a definition table to describe what the number of blinks mean. Change oil, change battery etc. I mounted it on the side of the transfer switch that faces the door in the garage, that way I see it every time I go to my car.

I could not be more pleased with this unit. Barring a natural catastrophe that cuts the gas from the house we are ready for anything mother nature throws at us. I highly recommend this to anyone thinking of getting one. I would estimate it raised the value of our home by 10K if not more. Well worth the money if that's a factor in your decision to purchase or not.

Note: The surge rating for this unit on natural gas is 17KW (Got that from the service rep)
