Although my existing regulator was working fine, it was about 8 years old and the hose was beginning to become brittle. Other than that, I had never had a problem with it. The old one was a Char-Broil that I had purchased in HD and my intent was to find something as close as possible with which to replace it given it had served me so well.I was happy to find what appeared to be a Char-Broil regulator of identical design here on Amazon. Well, at least the item's picture led me to believe it was of identical design. But as sometimes happens, what you see is not what you get. And what I got was of a completely different design. Most notably:
1 - The tank coupling nut was shorter
2 - There was only about 0.25" of clearance between the coupling nut and the regulator body
3 - There was no linear "play" in the coupling nut. That is, it could not be slid back toward the regulator body when connecting to the tank. This results in a bit more difficulty in lining up the brass connector with the tank. This was due to there being a much shorter nipple (if any at all) between the regulator body and the brass tank connector.
4 - The regulator body was of a completely different design. The design difference which contributed to my negative review was that it did not extend outward at the point where it connects with the tank coupling. Not only did this contribute to #2 above, but it also resulted in significantly reduced clearance between the regulator and the tank valve.
It should be noted that the unopened Char-Broil packaging had a picture identical to that on Amazon. Seems they might have changed suppliers. (I hate when that happens! It was the reason for the only other review I've written until now.)
Now here's the dangerous part: Upon connecting the regulator to my grill and tank, I opened the tank valve to perform a leak test. The leak test wasn't even necessary as I immediately smelled gas. Closed the valve, confirmed that all connections were properly tightened and tried again. The gas smell continued.
I then did a leak test to determine the source. It took a while to find because the leak was between the coupling nut and regulator body. And as I mentioned above, there is barely any room between the nut and regulator so as to allow straightforward application of any liquid. The way I finally got some liquid in there and confirmed it as the leak source was with an eye-dropper. My guess is most people won't be that meticulous when doing a leak test. I certainly would not have been had I not smelled gas. Had it been a slightly breezy day, I probably wouldn't have smelled it and would definitely not have gotten out an eye-dropper. :-)
As a final confirmation that the regulator and not the tank was at fault, I tried with two other tanks and got the exact same result.
Needless to say I've returned the item and brought its potential danger to Amazon's attention. I would strongly suggest not purchasing this product until some type of confirmation is received from Amazon that mine was an isolated incident and not a design defect. If you have already purchased it and it is of the design I described, you might want to confirm there are no leaks as I detailed above.
