Your generator is not defective. Get some information on switching the neutral wire on your tranfer switch. Most tranfer switches only switch the two hots and not the neutral or ground. The Briggs Pro generator bonds its neutral to ground so now you have two: one on your home panel which is shared with the generator via the transfer switch and the other on the generator itself. The generator senses that not all the current is coming back to the generator and thinks there is a ground fault so it trips the circuit. You need a four pole transfer switch which will switch the neutral along with the hots. An alternative would be to buy one of those cheapie generators without GFCI so that you would only have one neutral and one ground. Hope this helps.
