Generac QuietSource Series QT03624ANAX 36 kW Liquid-Cooled Propane/Natural Gas Powered Standby Generator without Transfer Switch Review

I contacted a number of local companies to get a generator for a house we have remodeled. The backlog for getting the Generac (generally recognized as one of the best) was 2-3 months. Little did I know that I could go here to Amazon and get it in a couple of days via Amazon Prime. Well done Amazon!

As for the generator itself, this is a great product. So quiet I can't hear it from inside the house. It generates more than enough power to handle an average sized house. Keep in mind that though the generator can handle 36Kw, the bus on the generator is 150 amps. I have mine set up to test run every week for a few minutes; this is easily set by the control panel inside the generator. Mine runs on LP and I had a 500 gallon tank installed to cover it.

The only challenge is ensuring you get the correct ATS (automatic transfer switch) for your application. Spend some time on the Generac site and talk to people in the know about this. Do your homework! I didn't and it ended up costing me. Not only do you need to ensure you have the right class of generator and switch, you need to check your local regulations for permits, etc.

If you live in an area like I do that can have fairly frequent power outages, this is an outstanding product and I highly recommend it.

UPDATE: About 4 months after installation an electrician that was out doing some other work decided to test run the generator after he needed to cut power to the house. Unfortunately it cut out after about 35 minutes and the panel indicated there was an error. Apparently the cam sensor had triggered and the generator was non-operational. I found a local Generac authorized service guy and he came out (free of charge since it was covered under warranty), determined what was wrong and ordered a replacement cam sensor. He said this was a fairly common problem. It took a little over a month but tomorrow we're supposed to get the cam sensor installed and running again. This was very troubling given this is a very expensive piece of equipment and we've been without backup power now for over a month. Fortunately the power hasn't dropped on us in that time.
