Steele Products SP-GT-750 Manual Transfer Switch With 6-Foot Power Cord Review

Last year, I installed a Reliance Pro Tran 30-amp transfer 6-circuit kit. During a 2-week power outage courtesy of hurricane Sandy, I resorted to redoing the circuit assignments to power our sewage ejector pump to avert an overflow. I decided I needed another transfer switch for a second set of circuits including the ejector pump. The Reliance was a breeze to install thanks to the included DVD and online video, not to mention the excellent phone support.

I ordered the Steele kit only because the Reliance was out of stock (had an online order for it for a whole month with no indication of when it was going to be available). Without my installation experience with the Reliance, the Steele kit would have been impossible as a DIY project.

The package did not come with installation instructions, what appears to be installation steps are instructions on how to hook up the generator AFTER switch installation. There is a circuit diagram, but that is not very helpful.

The housing looks like very heavy gauge metal and I'm afraid the knock-out holes will be a challenge. Compared to the Reliance, the Steele does not have wattmeters and the included power cord is only 6 feet.

This kit will be ok if you plan on hiring an electrician to install it for you.
