After doing a great deal of research and investigation, I settled on this unit to provide backup power during power outages.

It was professionally installed with a building/electrical permit along with DML (load) modules. The install is quite complex and requires large gauge wiring to the unit along with a number of control wires. In my case the unit is about 70 feet from the house to minimize noise and two conduits were run. One nice aspect about the 200 AMP transfer switch is that the install work can be less involved than having to switch over individual circuits.

The results have been excellent so far. When power fails the unit goes on in about 10 seconds and you simply cannot tell you aren't running on utility power. With smart switch technology, you can get a generator which is quite a bit smaller then previously required. The switch will shut off large loads as required instead of the generator simply failing.

In my case, having to power to the unit with propane meant that I wanted to get a smaller unit that would last longer, allowing me to get smaller propane tanks. The tanks are expensive to buy (or rent) and they are also unsightly. You also have to consider that the cost of the propane can be quite substantial when it sits unused in the tank for potentially years. If you have natural gas, this isn't an issue and you might as well get a 20K unit.

You could also get the 17K unit, which uses a similar amount of fuel, but provides more power. It's also available with an aluminum case, where as this unit is only available in steel.

Do be prepared for Generac not to provide you with much help (if you need it). They are setup to sell these units through dealers and thus depend on a dealer network for most support.
