I ordered the Stanley All-Weather 5000 watt generator through Amazon.com. The delivery was actually handled by Yellow Freight, and the product came from Northern Tool. Although the delivery was made only 5 days after I ordered it, the delivery window was supposed to be between noon and 4pm on a Friday, which I had set up the day before. At 5pm on that Friday, I still had not received the item. The truck finally showed up at 7pm without anyone ever calling me with an update, and I was late for work by 2 hours.I set up the generator the next day, which only consisted of putting on the wheels and front rubber stabilizers. Trying to fill it up with oil was very difficult without a long neck funnel because of the angle, so I had to go to Home Depot to buy one. After filling it with oil and gasoline, I followed the starting instructions and it fired up on the first pull (the instruction manual was confusing, as it alternated from page to page in different languages. I have no idea why it was set up that way). I let it run for half an hour, and I hooked up my refrigerator, sump pump, and a couple lights. It ran smoothly and quietly(about 68 decibels). Unfortunately it also leaked a large amount of oil, onto my driveway and newly-sodded lawn (back to Home Depot for Oil-Dry and degreaser). It appeared to be leaking from the valve cover. It turns out that the valve cover bolt was very loose, and when I tipped the generator to that side to fill it with oil due to the almost horizontal position of the oil fill cylinder, the oil flooded that side. I tightened the valve cover bolt as suggested by the troubleshooting guide in the manual, and that stopped the leak. When I called Stanley customer service, they also suggested to drain the oil completely and start over again, as tipping the generator towards the valve cover side can make the engine smoke, possibly causing damage and negating the warranty. Moral of the story-invest in a long, flexible oil/gas funnel, do not tip the generator, and if you absolutely have to, do NOT tip it towards the valve cover side. This will save you much aggravation and time.
I actually had to use the generator for a power outage 3 days after I received it, and it started up again on the first pull and ran like a champ for about 2 and half hours, with not a drop of oil leaked after I resolved the previously mentioned problem. The detachable control panel is a great idea. It would have been nice to have a wattage indicator and gasoline gauge on this unit, so if that's something you really value, you may have to look at a different unit with those features. The large gas tank and all-weather capabilities are indispensable, at least in my opinion.
Only other complaint I have is that the yellow paint on the generator chips off quite easily - I would have thought the paint on an all-weather generator would have been more robust. I can't really recommend this generator at this time, as I have not used it often enough to determine it's long-term reliabilty. But when I have used it for a power outage, it performed very well.Stanley All-Weather Generator - 6000 Surge Watts, 5000 Rated Watts, 24-Hour Run Time, Removable Cord, Model# G5
UPDATE: The electricity in the Chicago area on July 11th, 2011 went out for over 850,000 Com Ed customers after a violent storm. I had to run my generator for about 24 hrs.continuously and then my fiancee used it at her house for 12 hours after that. As of this date(July 14th), thousands still do not have power. The generator ran flawlessly, and the delivery of electrical current was steady and smooth. Just days prior to this, I had a transfer switch box installed in my basement by an electrician, and I was able to plug the cord that came with the switch into the switch box outlet to power all the electrical outlets and switches in my house. Being able to use the outlets and light switches without any cords in the house was a godsend, and made the outage so much more able. But be careful-just because you can use the outlets and switches doesn't mean you can use every appliance in the house at one time.
