I just received this machine this week, coincidentally just in time for Hurricane Sandy. (Sorry Amazon, I broke with habit and bought it elsewhere.)All components came well packaged. The finish and build are excellent and sturdy. Set up was painless, consisting of bolting on the wheel axle, two handles, two foot brackets, clipping on two wheels, connecting the battery, filling the oil (included), and fueling.
The battery came with plenty of charge to crank the motor. [Note: The generator does not directly charge the cranking battery. Keep it charged w/ the included 'wall-wart' charger. The op manual explains this.] It fired up as soon as oil pressure was detected. After letting it run for a few minutes I checked for power output, which was fine. After letting it cool down I tried the pull start to make sure that starting method would work, which it did on the first pull. All generators require an earth ground, so a shortcut there to save time is seriously not recommended.
I read through the manual, which was adequate for operating a fairly simple device.
The generator is loud, but I can't quantify this. It doesn't sound louder that my neighbor's 4500W gen.
Overall this is an excellent machine. I can't find any shortcomings at all, and couldn't ask for a better modest-sized portable generator.
I don't know what problem the other reviewer had that required calling Honeywell/Generac off normal business hours. His assertion that 'if your power goes off anytime other than Monday through Friday business hours, you are on your own' is unsupported by details. I can't comment on his frustration over getting maintenance done, and he didn't indicate what kind of problem he had.
I will say this: An owner should make sure emergency equipment works before it's needed, ie, before the power goes out. If it's that important put in the effort to make sure it works. Identify problems with emergency equipment before the emergency arrives so you have time to get things right. And in reality, you're *always* on your own, so plan ahead.
