Purchased this unit to help deal with the Oct 30th, 2011 snow storm in Massachusetts due to being located in a town without power for almost a full week. Initially leery of purchasing a (clearly) Chinese designed and manufactured generator, but initial impressions have left me pleasantly surprised. As opposed to reviews of other cheap generators that noted massive shipping damage and poor packaging, this unit came in a custom-made carton with molded styrene protected essential engine parts as well as solid panels on all 6 sides. The carton had clearly taken some handling abuse but there was not so much as a scratch on the unit when unpacked.
Documentation was as sparse as expected, the manual is little more than a how-to-start guide with little to no information on regular maintenance and troubleshooting. There isn't even a description of the voltage switch! However if you can change the oil on any small-engined yard implement, this unit will not give you any trouble.
Initial startup was trouble-free. Purged the gas intake, switched choke to "winter starting", and three pulls later it was humming along nicely. Unit isn't whisper quiet, but there are no rattles, clangs or other bothersome sounds, just normal combustion noise.
After 3-4 hours of occasional use, the unit has performed well, powering a kitchen fridge, large chest freezer, and a direct-vent propane water heater in shifts of 2 devices at a time. It may be possible to run all three, but the lack of watt-meter or ammeter on the unit limits you to engine tone and intuition to prevent overloading.
The one big caveat overall would be that this is a utility generator only and does not provide suitably smooth voltage to power sensitive electronics. However any sort of line conditioning equipment (a small UPS for example) should let you run what sensitive electronics you may need during a sustained outage.
Do note that as this is a bottom-line produced product, you will most likely see differences between every production run. The unit I received, while functionally similar to the unit pictured, has several differences:
- The LPG intake hose enters the unit on top through a hose on the left vs. the front intake pictured.
- There is only one Run/Stop switch.
- There is a "Pilot Light" indicator underneath the volt meter.
- The circuit breaker is an integrated panel mount, only the switch lever protrudes.
- The twist-lock and outlet plugs are reversed vs. pictured.
- There is a steel louvered panel over the muffler area to prevent direct contact.
Overall a great unit if you don't have the time/money to source a more expensive major brand, and the relative cleanliness of propane makes it a great emergency standby!
