Amerec AT5 Touch Control Series Generator, 5kW Review

So far it has been installed for a few days now, and the first several uses have been great. The user interface is simple. I even had it turn on automatically in the morning, which was really nice. Even though my shower is small (3'x3.5'x6.5' = 68 cubic ft) it still takes a little while to heat up. This might be because of the "soft steam" feature mentioned in the item description. On the plus side, I can put my feet near the steam head and not have to worry about being scolded (note: my steam head is ~12" off the ground).

The controller itself looks stunning. I recommend positioning it to face the rest of the room so that it is as visible as possible.

I found part of the item description confusing. It's my own error, but they make it sound like everything is included. However, the "steam head" needs to be purchased separately.

My contractor did not realize that the unit could have been hooked up to control the light in the shower. This would be nice to have, but it's not his fault, since the installation instructions say nothing about how to accomplish this. Actually, there is a diagram on p14 of the installation instructions with a box that says "Low Voltage Light" which shows where the light fixture should connect in order to be controlled by the steam controller. However, they need to update the instructions to include an extra step describing this.

Also, I live in a high-rise building which made the drain plumbing complicated. I can't have the steam machine drain into the main shower pipe, because if it overflows while someone is showering, the hot water could burn their feet. Since reaching an alternative pipe is not an option, I was not able to utilize the auto-flush feature, which is an extra part that gets attached to the outside of the generator. However, it did come with a manual drain valve as well, which means that after every so many hours of use, I will need to drain the unit manually, which will be a bit of a pain. The computer though has a great feature that will remind you to do this after every X number of hours of usage (you get to choose X).

I should also mention that Amerec's customer service and tech support were both great. At my request, they emailed me all the manuals, so I could make sure my contractor was comfortable with the unit before purchase. As far as I can tell, the AT line of generators is identical to the AK line, except the AT generators have a different PCA chip that allows it to communicate with the advanced controller as well as hook up the light fixture.

The AK5 version (the older model) would cost $875 + $414 for the crappy 3 button standard amerec controller and steam head + $225 for auto-flush = $1515.
The AT5 version (being reviewed) is $1481 + $70 for a steam head = $1550.

Easy choice.

Downside to the AT, it that you are forced to purchase the auto-flush. The auto-flush is important for prolonging the life of the steam generator and it is strongly recommended. However, it would be really nice if the company would consider accepting returns for the auto-flush for those who can't make use of it.

What I like most about the fancy AT controller (over the crappy standard one for the AK) is that I can easily adjust the temperature in either direction with a few taps. With the standard AK controller, there is only a single button for controlling the temperature, so you have to push in the temperature button and hold it for ~20 seconds while you wait for the temperature setting to cycle to the one you want. User interface matters! After being behind for a while, Amerec just took a huge leap ahead of Mr. Steam.
