Champion 7500/9375 Watt Portable Generator CARBChampion 7500/9375 Watt Portable Generator CARB Review
Living in the north east, Hurricanes, snowstorms, Noreasters. you name it we get them. Durring Huricane Sandy, I filled it with oil, and gas. Then one push of the electric start and away it went. The Unit is packed with features. The Intelliguage shows power, voltage and hours run. Using professional meters the guages were within tollerance. The unit is very well built for a unit Manufactured in China. This unit is HEAVY! It weighs 236lb without gas. It has wheels, but still hard to manuever. I myself am installing a transfer switch and permanently mounting the unit in a small shed. My recomendation, if you want to use a transfer switch, is to have a professional do it. The unit is loud 74db but not much louder than units similar in size. This unit can handle a 60 amp draw with no problem. I pushed this unit to 8200 watts for several minutes and it never skipped a beat. now the technical points. The unit has a floating neutral which means less wiring if using a transfer switch.
Units made for sale in Canada require the Neutral leg of the generator be bonded to ground, due to Canadian OSHA regs. In that case you will aso have to switch the neutral leg in a transfer switch. If you have never used a generator before, here are some things to remember. For safety reasons, ALWAYS I repeat ALWAYS check that the ground lug on the generator is tied to a good earth ground! Either a 4ft copper rod driven into the ground, or for those with city water, the copper pipe entering your house from the street. ( Know your local codes ) There are 2 120v outlets on this unit and a L14-30 twist lock for 120/240v operation. My unit came with a 25ft extension chord that has 4 outlets that feed from the 120/240 L14-30 receptical. This alone is an $80-$100 value . Another suggestion: 7500 watts is a lot of power. Without getting technical, try to even the load when using the outlets. Half the load on one set then half on the other. A ballanced load will help keep wear and tear on the generator to a minimum. Overall I have had no problems with this unit and would highly recommend it. For under $900.00 It is well worth the price. The only con is, that I feel the Gas tank should be bigger. With a 15hp engine driving the generator, a 5.9 gal. tank will give you about 9-10 hrs at half load (through my tests )I would have liked to see at least an 8 gal. tank. With no problems, and little bad to say about this unit. I have to give it 5 stars. I will update this review the more I use the unit.
